How to create a hyperlink in MS Powerpoint (PPT) 2016? This article will provide you a solution for this query. Steps to create hyperlink in Powerpoint 2016:
Step 1: Select an object from the slide to which you want to add a hyperlink. As in the image below you can see that I selected the flower image(1), you can even select any text on the slide or a shape or chart or a word art that is present on your slide. After you select the object, click on the “Insert” (2) tab at the top of your screen. Under Insert tab in “Links” group, we have a “Hyperlink” (3) tab click on that Hyperlink tab.
Step 2: An “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box will open. The Insert Hyperlink dialog box will provide you four options for adding a hyperlink which are:
- Existing File or Web Page
- Place in This Document
- Create New Document
- E-mail Address
Option 1: “Existing File or Web Page“
Adding hyperlink to an existing File or a Web Page
The first option in “Link to” group is “Existing File or Web Page”. Choosing this tab will allow you to add a hyperlink to an existing file on your computer or to a web page on the internet or to a slide on the other presentation. You can search your file or web page using the three tab provided by the “Existing File or Web Page” that are “Current Folder”, “Browsed pages”, “Recent Files”. You can even search the file or web page using the icons provided to the right side of the dialog box as shown in the figure.
Option 2: “Place in This Document“
Adding hyperlink to a slide present in the same presentation
The second option, under “Link to” group of “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box is “Place in This Document” which allows you to add a hyperlink to a slide present in the same presentation. Under “Place in This Document” tab, you have a “Select a place in this document” box. From the box select the slide which you want to add as a destination slide of the hyperlink. Click Ok.
Or if you want to make the custom show as the destination of your hyperlink then select the custom show, Mark the “Show and return” box and click OK. It will let to add more than one slide as a destination of the hyperlink.
Option 3: “Create New Document“

The third option, under “Link to” group of “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box is “Create New Document” which allows the creation of a new document as a destination of your hyperlink i.e. when you will click the hyperlink object while slideshow it will open a new document immediately. You have to name the document along with the extension. You can also change the path of your file. You also have the “When to edit” option click the option of your choice and click OK.
Adding hyperlink to an E-mail Address
The Fourth option, under “Link to” group of “Insert Hyperlink” dialog box is “E-mail Address”. This tab allows you to add a hyperlink to an email address. Type the email address that to want to add as a hyperlink and type the subject and click OK.
Step 3: For further illustration, I am selecting the first option “Existing File or Web Page”. How to proceed further is explained below.
For adding a hyperlink to an existing file on the computer. Search for the file, which you want to add as a destination to the hyperlink, using “Browse for File” icon and when you find the file of your interest, select the file and click OK.
For adding a hyperlink to the web page on the internet click on the “Browse Web” icon. Search the web page in the browser which you want to add as the destination to the hyperlink. Copy the URL of that web page and paste it in the “Address” tab present at the bottom of the dialog box and click “OK”.
For adding a hyperlink to a slide on another presentation, first, search for that another presentation. You can search it in “Current Folder”, “Browsed Pages”, “Recent Pages”. Once that presentation is found, click on the file and then click on the “Bookmark” tab on the right-hand side.
It will pop up a dialog box “Select Place in Document” select the slide to which you want to add as a destination slide of the hyperlink. Click Ok.
After you click OK you will return back to the of Powerpoint page you were working on. As now, the hyperlink is added to the object of your choice, when you will play the slide show and while playing if you click the object to which you added the hyperlink will lead you to the destination you decided for that hyperlink.
