Do you want to backup messages in WhatsApp? Creating a backup helps you in restoring all your previous messages and media when you reinstall WhatsApp again. You can place your generated backup on your local device or on Google Drive its totally up to you to choose the storage location.
In this section, we will discuss the steps to backup messages in WhatsApp using the two methods below.
Steps to Backup Messages in WhatsApp:
Backup in Google Drive
Step 1: Open your WhatsApp app and tap on More options denoted by three vertical dots at the top right corner of your screen.
Step 2: From the displayed options tap on Settings.
Step 3: Under Settings, you have to tap on Chats.
Step 4: Under Chats, scroll down and tap on ‘Chat Backup’.
Step 5: Now, to back up your WhatsApp messages and media you have to enable backup to Google Drive. For that scroll down in Chat backup and tap on ‘Backup to Google Drive’.
From the provided option choose any option other than ‘Never’ as choosing ‘Never’ would not save the backup to Google Drive. So, I have chosen ‘Monthly‘ backup.
Step 6: Next you have to choose a Google account using which you want to save the backup to the Google Drive. Tap on Google Account.
Choose your preferred Google account.
Step 7: Next you have to tap on the ‘Back up over’ to choose the internet mode.
You are recommended to choose Wi-Fi as choosing the cellular option may apply charges.
In case you also want to back up your WhatsApp videos on the toggle button beside Include videos.
Now, scroll up and tap on ‘BACK UP’ button.
You can see in the image below my WhatsApp backup has been stored on Google Drive. You can see that the time of backup on Google Drive and my phone time are the same.
Backup on your Phone
Step 1: To generate a backup on your local phone itself you have disabled back up on Google Drive and for you have to navigate to Settings>Chat>Chat backup>backup to Google Drive.
And here you have to choose Never as we need backup on the local device now.
Step 2: Now tap on Backup to create a backup.
In the image below you can see that my backup has been successfully stored on the local device, you can match the time of backup and your cell phone time.
