How to Block a Website in Firefox?

Do you want to block a website in Firefox? Some sites do have irrelevant and offensive content and we don’t want to visit such sites or if any of your younger sibling or your child is wasting too much time on the internet. Then blocking sites with irrelevant content becomes important.

Well, if you are using the Firefox web browser, then let me tell you it doesn’t have an inbuilt feature to block websites. On the way, it allows installing add-ons or extensions which would help in blocking the websites. ‘Block Site’ is a popular add-on which you can add to your Firefox browser.

We also have another method in which you can edit a host file in Windows to block a website. In this section, we will discuss both these methods.

  2. Using Host File in Windows

Steps to Block a Website in Firefox:

Adding Block Site Add-on

Step 1: Open your Firefox web browser and click on the menu button at the top right corner of the browser window. From the displayed option click on Add-ons.

Step 2: A new tab ‘Add-ons Manager’ will be opened. In the ‘Find more add-ons’ search box search for ‘Block Site’.

Step 3: A new tab with the Add-ons searches will open there click on first search result i.e. ‘Block Site’.

Step 4: Now to add this ‘Block Site’ extension to your Firefox click the ‘+ Add to Firefox button’.

Step 5: It will ask for your permission to add the extension to Firefox. Click on the Add button to permit.

A message will be displayed in a small pop-up window that the extension has been added to the Firefox.

Step 6: Now type the URL in the address bar of Firefox web browser and then click on the Block Site add-on icon as you can see in the image below.

Step 7: A confirmation dialog box will appear asking you that are you sure about restricting this website. Click OK to block.

Now, whenever the restricted URL will be accessed through Firefox the user will see the image below.

If you want to block multiple websites at once go to the Firefox Add-on page there you will find the added Block Site extension beside it you can view menu button click it and from the displayed option click on Options.

In a new tab, Block Site Options page will be displayed where you can add the address of multiple websites you want to block one by one under Block a new hostname box.

You can also redirect the blocked websites to another website. For this type the address of the website to which you want to redirect the blocked websites under Redirect to box as you can see in the image below.

Using Host File in Windows

Step 1: Trace the path given below in your File Explorer.

C>Windows>System 32>drivers>etc.

Here you have to double-click the hosts file.

Step 2: Use Notepad to open the hosts file.

Step 3: Add the address of the website you want to block at the last line of the file, in the manner given in the image below.

Step 4: Save the file to preserve the changes.
