How to Configure your Default Application in Ubuntu 14.04

Default application is a setting that is automatically assigned to a software program. In other words, you may set which application is going to open which file.

When you want to open any specific file (say mp3) with a particular application (say vlc media player) , then you have to set vlc media player as “by default” for mp3 file. By going through this article, you would know about how to configure your default application in Ubuntu 14.04.

Steps to configure your default application:

Step 1: First, go to Unity Launcher and select “System Settings” by clicking on gear icon, as shown in the image below.

Step 2: Under, ‘System Settings’ go to “Details” option.

Step 3: Now under ‘Details’, click on “Default Application”.

Step 4: Under ‘Default application’ tab you’ll see different drop-downs. Here, you can change default application for Web, mail, calendar, Music, Video and Photos. (Note: Only installed applications may appear in the drop-down).

Step 5: In the same way you can change default application for your Removable media.
