Nowadays, the NTFS (New Technology File System) is widely used, as it offers the high data storage capacity, higher security, faster accessing speed and reliability over Fat32. Therefore many people are converting their file system from FAT32 to NTFS and it is quite easy to do so. It can be done in two ways :
- By formatting the drive
- By command prompt
In this article you will learn the steps to convert Hard disk Partition from FAT32 to NTFS by following any of the two methods as explained below.
Steps to Convert Hard Disk Partition from FAT32 to NTFS in Windows 7
NOTE:
Ensure that the drive you are going to convert is empty and the data is backed up otherwise your data will be lost.
Method 1 of 2:
By Formatting the Drive:
Step 1: Right click on the drive which you want to change, then click on “Format”.
Step 2: Select the File system as “NTFS (Default)”.
Step 3: Set “Allocation unit size” to “Default allocation size”.
Step 4: Finally, press “Start” button to make the changes.
Step 5: A dialog box will appear, read it properly, and click on “OK”.
Step 6: To view the changed File system, go to properties of the respective drive and check, then press “OK”.
My computer’s “E Drive” is converted to NTFS as shown below.
Method 2 of 2:
By using the Command Prompt:
Step 1: Click on “Start”, go to “All Programs”.
Step 2: Then go to “Accessories”.
Step 3: Various options will appear, go to “Command Prompt” and right click on it, then select “Run as Administrator”.
Step 4: After running the program, command prompt window will open, type “convert E: /fs:ntfs” and press enter.
Step 5: You”ll get the message to enter the label of volume, so write the label after colon and press enter, I have inserted “E” as the label for the drive.
Step 6: Conversion will start, after certain operations are performed you”ll see “Conversion Complete” message on the screen.
Step 7: You can check the converted file system by clicking on “Properties option” on the drive.
