How to Create and Extract RAR Files in Windows 10?

Have you ever created and extracted RAR file in Windows 10? Well RAR files are compressed files that we create to save space on our hard disk. The RAR files are created by the Win RAR archiver. With the steps below you will learn to create and extract the RAR files in Windows 10.

Steps to Create and Extract RAR File in Windows 10:

Create RAR Files

Step 1: Launch the file explorer and browse for the file or folder of which you want to create a RAR file. Select the corresponding file or folder and right-click on it. From the displayed menu options click on ‘Add to archive…’.

Step 2: A window ‘Archive name and parameter’ will pop out where you can name the RAR file that is to be generated and set your preferred parameters.

1. Archive name: Here you can browse the destination location where the generated archive file or folder will be stored. And you can name the archive folder.
2. Archive Format: You can decide the format of your archive file or folder.
3. Compression Method: Usually we prefer ‘Normal’ compression. But you can go for good and better options to compress the file more.

If required you can set a password for your archived file/folder. For that just click on the ‘Set password’ button. Another window ‘Enter password’ will pop out where you can enter a password and click on OK to close this window.

Again, click on OK to close ‘Archive name and parameters’ window.

This method will create an archive file/folder on your specified location. You can see I have created Test Folder.rar a WinRAR archive file.

Extract or Open RAR Files

Now after creating a WinRAR file we must learn how to extract or open RAR files.

Step 1: Double click on the WinRAR file, the content of which you want to extract, to open it.

Step 2: Select the file or folder that you want to extract and in the menu bar click on ‘Extract To’.

Step 3: A new pop up window ‘Extraction path and options’ will appear where you can browse the destination location where you want to extract the file or folder present inside the RAR file. After selecting the location click on OK.

Step 4: Now you can navigate to the location where you have extracted the content of the WinRAR file and get your file in its original format. As you can see I have extracted the Test folder on the desktop.
