Did you know that you can create desktop icons in Ubuntu?. Surprised..!! As you know that Ubuntu doesn’t have any desktop icons as compared to Windows because it comes with the Unity launcher which contains all the icons and applications and when you hover your mouse on the left side of your screen, then you may see that Launcher.
But, if you want to create your own desktop icons, then you may have to install some extra packages and run some commands. Just have a glance at this article to find out how to install desktop icons in Ubuntu 14.04.
Steps to create desktop icons:

Step 2: Under Terminal, type: “sudo apt-get install –no-install-recommends gnome-panel” and then press enter. (Note- There are two dashes before ‘no’ in this command).
Step 3: You’ll be prompted to provide your password, type your password and press enter.
Step 4: Now, you may see that your gnome package is getting installed. When it asks “Do you want to continue” then just type (Y) and press enter.
Step 5: When your gnome package is completely installed, then type: ” gnome-desktop-item-edit –create-new ~/Desktop” and then press enter.
Step 6: You’ll see a new window (Create Launcher) pops open. Here, you’ll have to provide launcher type, name, path, and comment.
