Steps to install gnome desktop:
Step 1: First open your terminal by using “Ctrl + ALT + T” and then type: “sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback”, press enter.
Step 2: Now, you’ll be prompted to provide your Ubuntu password for authentication. Type your password and press enter.
Step 3: After that you’ll be asked “Do you want to continue further”, press ‘y’(yes) and hit enter.
Step 4: When Gnome desktop installation is completed, then type “exit” in order to close the terminal.
Step 5: Now click on the gear icon at the top right corner of your screen and from the drop down, click on “logout”.
Step 6: Under welcome screen you’ll see an Ubuntu icon as marked in the image below. Just click on that icon.
Step 7: Now you’ll see the different desktop environment, here choose “GNOME Flashback (Metacity).”
Step 8: As soon as you logged on, you may experience gnome desktop environment as shown in the image below.
