Windows 10 utilize internet connection without any restrictions. It keeps on updating the Windows and other applications on your system and automatically gets connected to the cloud services. This reduces your internet data without any concern.
This is not an issue if you have unlimited data plans. But if you are on a limited data plan then this would create a problem. However, there is a feature in Windows 10 which allow you to set your internet connection metered. By default, the Windows 10 consider that your Ethernet connection is on an unlimited data plan so it by default set it as unmetered. In Windows 10 for unmetered connections, the set value is 1 and for metered connection, your set value is 2.

Steps to Set Ethernet as Metered Connection in Windows 10:
Step 1: Search for the Run App in the Windows search box.
Step 2: To open ‘Registry Editor’ type the command ‘regedit’ and click OK.
Windows will prompt a message that this registry editor app may implement some changes to your device. To continue, click on ‘Yes’.
Step 3: The above step will open registry editor app where, at the left-hand side in the navigation panel you have to navigate the path shown below:
Step 4: At the right-hand side of the registry editor window you can see that the value set for the Ethernet connection is 1 which resembles that the Ethernet connection is not metered.
To set the Ethernet connection as metered right click on the ‘DefaultMediaCost’ and from the displayed results click on ‘Permissions…’.
Step 5: A Permission dialog box for DefaultMediaCost will open where you have to click on ‘Advanced’.
Step 6: A new window will get prompted where you have to select the Administrator account. So, type ‘administrator’ in the ‘Enter object names’ text box and click on ‘Check Names’.
You can observe that as soon as you click on the Check Names it will display the administrator’s account then click on OK.
You have to enable full control for the administrator’s account and click on OK.
You also have to check the check box to replace owner on sub containers and objects then click on Apply and OK.
Step 7: Now to set Ethernet connection as metered you have to double click on Ethernet.
It will prompt an ‘Edit’ box where you have to set Value data to 2. And click on OK.
You can observe that value of Ethernet is now set to 2 which means that this connection is metered now.
