In windows, file extensions are kept hidden in order to keep things as simple as possible. File Extension is a set of characters which help windows to recognize the kind of information present in the file. Mostly it is assigned at the end of every file.
There are two parts in files:
- Descriptive part ( defines the name of the file).
- File Extension (tells the kind of file).

Steps to Show File Extensions in Windows 7
Step 1: Click “Start” menu to open the “Control Panel”.
Step 2: In the “Category” view, click on “Appearance and Personalization”.
This will take you to the “folder options” window.
Step 3: You may find many option in the center of the screen, click “Folder Options”.
Step 4: In the “Folder Options”, select “View” tab.
Scroll down till you find ” Hide extensions for unknown file types” and uncheck the option.
Click on “OK” to save these settings.
